Drama at Holy Rood RC High School

Drama plays an important part in everyones’ life.  Drama allows us to dive into our creative faculty – it is a course for all learners with a passion for performance, interest in collaboration or desire to develop self-confidence. Within drama, pupils will have the opportunity to work with peers on a number  of projects that develops their confidence and teamwork skills.

Our NPA and Higher courses are practical and experiencial, candidates develop practical skills in drama and use photography in visually imaginative ways. Candidates are encouraged to be critically self-aware and also develop their appreciation of work and practice within media.

In Scotland, every child and young person is entitled to experience a broad general education. This education takes place from the early yeatrs to the end of S3 and is represented by learning across all of the experiences and outcomes to the thrid curriculum level, consistent with each child or young person’s needs.

Experience in the expressive arts involve creating and presenting are practical and experiential. Through drama, learners have rich opportunities to be creative. Acting and presenting skills are developed through participating in scripted or improvised drama.

National 4 supports pupils to explore and develop ways of communicating thoughts and ideas to an audience. They will learn how to respond to stimuli. Pupils’ will explore productions skills used to enhance drama when presenting. Pupils will apply their knowledge through drama performance. Their performance will be open and flexible to allow for personalisation.

National 5 pupils will learn how to respond to stimuli, develop knowledge, understanding and practical experience of form, structure, genre and conventions when creating and presenting drama. Candidates are assessed on their preparation for performance which includes research into their chosen text, thoughts and ideas for thier proposed performance.

The NPA in Acting and Performance aims to provide a specific pathway to pupils whilst building on existing strengths and interest curriculum experiences that will develop stagecraft, performance skills and awareness of professional theatre.  Pupils will apply theatre skills to the rehearsal and performance of a role to an audience.

HIGHER
DRAMA

Higher courses are practical and experiential. Candidates develop practical skills in photography and intuitively develop visually imaginative pieces. Candidates are encouraged to be critically self-aware and also develop their appreciation of photographic work and practice. Higher is 77% coursework and 23% written exam.

ADVANCED HIGHER
DRAMA

During their advanced study of drama pupils will identify a performance issue. They will research relevant and current performance theories and practice, and communicate their findingsin a dissertation. Advanced Higher will develop students self awareness, analytcal and evaluating skill.

Drama provides a platform for personal growth that can assist learners in successful pathways for both further education and the world of work.
Participants develops transferable skills, such as team working and problem solving which are desired by many different educational and professional settings. The skills you learn in drama can help you to work in health care, business management, education, retail service, marketing and advertising.

If you wish to continue working in the expressive arts industry, then drama can provide pathways into acting, production design, playwriting, broadcasting, theatre, theatre in education, drama therapy and community arts.
