Dear Parents/Carers

It’s been another busy week, and a particular highlight was on Wednesday when our S4 Modern Studies pupils were treated to a virtual Q&A with Ros Atkins (BBC Journalist) and Josie Verghese (BBC Young Reporter Editorial Lead).  It was a fascinating insight into journalism and the role of media in democracy.  A huge thank you to Mr Radford who organised this inspirational event.

Next week is Languages Week Scotland and we are very fortunate to have so many languages represented within our school community. To name a few….

Buongiorno                 As – Salaam- Alaikum                                   Bonjour                                      Guten Tag

Witaj                           Nĭ-hăo                                                             Merhaba

Pupils at Holy Rood will be celebrating in a number of ways in which our Modern languages faculty staff would like to share with parents and carers. This is a fantastic opportunity to open up this discussion with your child and we hope that you take the opportunity to do this

  • S1 will be celebrating their own knowledge of other languages: those they are learning, those they would like to learn and also their own heritage languages and will be creating mini-books to show off what they know.
  • S2 will hear from a range of people from Business, Education and Industry about the relevance of languages in the world of work in our annual Languages Work Event.
  • S3 will build on activities undertaken on European Languages Day earlier this session to celebrate Heritage Languages spoken by the Holy Rood school community.  Pupils will lead learning sharing their knowledge of their heritage language with their peers by delivering some mini language lessons.
  • For pupils S4-S6 there will be a focus on Language Learning, careers and course choice and the relevance of language learning in leading to positive destinations.

S4-6 Supported Study – Updated Programme

A reminder to encourage your child to attend the Supported Study opportunities which are available https://tinyurl.com/4vymyzu6

Study Club

Our Study Club on a Tuesday evening from 3.30-4.30 is open to all pupils from S1-S4.  It offers a quiet space to complete homework/revision in the library with access to computers and teacher support on hand.

If your child normally travels by school bus, bus tokens will be provided for Supported Study and Study Club if they do not have their new National Entitlement Card.  Please ensure you have applied for this.

S4/5 Course Information

This week all senior pupils have attended Course Choice Assemblies and received final option course choice sheets.  In the coming week, we will send parents and carers a link to a pre-recorded presentation so that you can support your child in making good decisions which will lead to a positive destination.  We are in the process of collating and responding to the questions in a Frequently Asked Questions document which we hope you will find useful.

A reminder that Lateral Flow Testing Kits are offered to all pupils during school hours:

S5/6 Mondays                         S1, S2, S4 Tuesdays               S3 Wednesdays

Please note that parental consent is no longer required.  Kits are also available from the canteen towards the end of lunch time

It is vital that all pupils bring a face covering to school each day and wears it appropriately. Please remind your child of the importance of wearing his/her face covering so that it covers both the mouth and nose.  If your child tests positive for covid, please contact the school with isolation dates.
